How much sugar per day per hive

Unread post by lester1 »

If I put a quart of sugar water to one hive, how long should it last? I don't see any nectar. I'm trying to figure out if the holes in the lid are too big as the quart is gone in about 1 and a half days.

There is no fixed answer to your question. Hives can take feed at different rates.

If you invert the jar and the syrup stays in (except for a few small drops before the vacuum is established) then your holes are OK. If you are not finding syrup puddled on the bottom board then the holes are OK, the bees are consuming/storing it.

Thanks very much. They must be consuming it as there is no syrup on the bottom board.
