Yesterday's Post | Go back a year | Go back two years.

Baja Magic is at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.  Follow Baja Magic here. Corus is at at Port Sidney Marina.

I woke at 2:30, dozed until 3:30 and got up. I weigh 233.8, BG is 7.4, BP is  129/75 & 61 BPM.

Temperature is 21.7°C and humidity is 42% in the cabin. The companionway and portholes were open all night

Today, Vicki, Nelson and I drive to the Cabo San Lucas Costco to get my second hearting aid.

I bought a set of hearing aids there back in June, seeing as I did not know when if ever I would be back in Canada to replace on warranty the set I bought there and lost.  This set was problematic and the left one was distorted from day one.

It took two return visits to convince the audiologist of the defect. Then I left the defective one with them for warranty on Sept 23rd.

Then I was in Canada from Oct 6th to Nov 16th - 40 days.  So, I was without the second one until now.  However, I did restore my Canadian set on the trip back to Alberta, so I will now have two working rechargeable sets.

Vicki is talking about staying overnight in Cabo but I would rather be back.  Cristy and I pick up my bike tomorrow.

*   *   *   *   *   *

Again, I made an omelette with the 'free range' eggs and I am glad I only bought one carton.  They are weird.  I wonder what these chickens were 'free ranging'.

After this, I went back to bed and slept until seven.

At nine, I went up and met Vicki and Nelson and we drove to Cabo San Lucas, arriving at Costco at ten after twelve.

I was seen right away and got my new hearing aid.  It is much better than the one it replaces.  I now have two sets of rechargeable hearing aids.

We shopped and then let for La Paz, stopping for a late lunch in Pescadero at The Burguer Shack.  (Burguer is not a misspelling.  Burguer is short for hamburguesa).

The burgers were great and so were the fries.

We arrived home in La Paz at six, so it was good that I was able to move the appointment up to noon. Otherwise we would have had to stay overnight or drive in the dark -- not at all recommended in Mexico.

I put away groceries, had a few beers and went to bed.

I am drinking too much.  My excuse is that this Corus business is driving me to drink.

Yesterday's Post | Go back a year | Go back two years.

Baja Magic is at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.  Follow Baja Magic here. Corus is at at Port Sidney Marina.

I woke at midnight and got up. Temperature is 21.9 and humidity is 42% in the cabin. The companionway and portholes are open.

I am feeling much better in recent days, not that I was terrible before, but I do feel normal.

Today Cristy and I get my bike back and hope it finally works.

Today, is the also deadline I set myself to reply to Northwest about Corus.

I have done some rough calculations, and see there is nothing in continuing for me.  I wrote and rewrote a message,  then sat on i and mulled things over.  Every day I have more insight.

In spite of having written a lot of words, I have decided that a short note is best. Explaining a complex matter turns into over-explaining and can just complicate things.

My goal is to present a win/win solution in a way that is easily understood and accepted.

This is a holiday weekend. Independence Day is celebrated today, so there was a parade yesterday, which we missed, going to Cabo.  Costco was very crowded and parking was scarce.  The line-ups to get to the cash were brutal. After midnight, I could hear music all the way from the Malecon until a little while ago and it is now going on three.

I am really happy to be here, back with my cruiser friends.  I'm a local now.

Cruisers are generally social folks but there are the transients and there are locals in every port. I'm now a La Paz local.

Cruisers are a special group of unique and independent people who can and do rely on one another.  Cruisers are  mostly tolerant and make friends quickly and easily.

That is partly because we come and go, sometimes returning, sometimes not, and we have a lot in common.  Also, it is not just everyone who will happily get in a little boat and sail out of sight of land, off to unfamiliar shores and countries, deal with strange laws and cultures, and go back for more.

It is three now and I'm going back to bed.

I woke again at 7:14 and got up for the day.  It is sunny and temperature in the cabin is 21.0°C.  Humidity id 44%.

My scale went squirrelly but said 234 at one point. BG is 6.5 (non fasting) and BG is 154/89 and 57 BPM. Second reading 179/94 60.

At 8:50, 127/77 54.  I am down to 1.25 mg bisoprolol and still see bradycardia.

Cristy came by at 9:30 and had breakfast.  Then we drove to a shop where she picked up a sheet of pressboard, and then drove on to pick up Linda's wet suit but the shop was closed. Next, we got my bike.

This time it is working well. New chain, new derailleurs, and handlebar extensions, and it now shifts perfectly.  The cost: $750 MXN --$37.50 US.

We drove back to Cristy's shop and talked a while about painting her fence on Saturday. She wants to paint with a brush.  I explained a sprayer s more efficient and does a better job.  She has one but she is worried about wasting paint.  I'm worried bout the impossibility of painting wrought iron filigree with a brush.  Karen and Mina come Saturday so I have an excuse.

I met Karen and Mina on my last Cooper flotilla back in September 2020.  They wanted to swim so I took them out to a beach in the dinghy.

A month ago we met up again on Slack and they asked about their upcoming trip to Cabo, looking for sailing so I told them about La Paz and they will be coming here. I promised them a day or so of sailing with a possible trip farther.

My last flotilla                                 Karen & Mina

We had sandwiches for lunch, then I called for a ride on Didi and am back at MLP.

Next I have to deal with the Corus problem and I have huge reluctance to touch that topic.

It is 5:50 and I wrote and sent the letter. We'll see what happens, but getting that done and done right is a huge relief.

I had supper and decompressed from my letter writing.  The first response was positive, so we will see.

Now I need to focus on other things.

It is eight-forty five and too early to go to bed.

I went to bed a bit after nine but I heard back from Tracy and we corresponded until I finally went to bed again just after eleven

Maybe things will work out.

Sweden is Ron DeSantis's trump card

No Way Out for the USA

What’s often overlooked in the discussion of the importance of Nord Stream II is that, from the first day that the tap was to be turned on to supply Europe, US hegemony would end. Although the US had succeeded in dominating European policy over the last half-century, that situation had now reversed. In a choice between pleasing the US and pleasing the eastern suppliers of goods and energy, Europe’s default position would now be with Asia, not the US

Israel's peace with the U.A.E. has already borne more fruit than we could have imagined

Baja Magic is at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.  Follow Baja Magic here. Corus is at at Port Sidney Marina.

I slept well and got up at 6:00. Temperature is 19.0 and humidity is 44% in the cabin. The companionway and portholes are open.

Seems I cleared things up with Tracy by email.  Now it remains to be seen if I can settle with the boss. One thing for sure, NWE is very different from Cooper and is US based in Bellingham with locations in Sidney and Vancouver.

It is 8:08 and Cristy just called. She needs the lock combination.  She brought my bike and is locking it to the fence, then going to lead her yoga class.

I'm listening to the net and then should ride my bike.  I have nothing else planned today so if I can escape the keyboard.

I think I just bought a spinnaker pole at coffee.

Cristy came by to refill her coffee and chat.

Spot GPS accuracy seems to be off for the past few days.  Look where they have my boat. *red circle(.  My boat is in the yellow oval.

11:42 - 137/79 63 BPM.

I started cleaning the dinghy bottom.  Cristy had left the dinghy in the water with the outboard down all the time I was gone, so it had grown a garden.

I scraped off the worst but will go to the Magote tomorrow, pull the dinghy up on the beach, take the engine off, scrape the bottom properly, and clean the leg on the outboard properly.  I'll also install the zinc, something |I should have done earlier but requires removing the fin, which is difficult when the outboard is mounted on the dinghy.

Doug brought the spinnaker pole over and we'll try it tomorrow.  It is too windy to pull out the foresail right now.

Late in the afternoon, I was sorting items in the lockers but decided to get some beer. That was the end of my work for the day.

I did manage to get response from DHL on locating my wheel pilot, but in Spanish, and indicating that payment is needed.  However, it is unclear how to do that.  I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out.

I had supper and did some reading and went to bed at eight.

I'm in a strange space.  I had just adjusted to living here but now have the Canadian west coast issues and opportunities, and the eye appointment in Canada in January.  Seems I am a traveler again.

Baja Magic is at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.  Follow Baja Magic here. Corus is at at Port Sidney Marina.

I slept well and got up at 3:29.  Temperature is 21.0 and humidity is 40% in the cabin.

BG is 6.6. BP is 129/76, 61 BPM.

I should take a bike ride this morning. Then, Doug will be over and we will try the spinnaker pole.  Later I'll take the dinghy to the Magote to scrape the bottom.

At least that is my plan now, but things could change and we will see how my ambition holds out.  The boat needs a wash, too..

Luis' crew came by first thing and are scraping the barnacles and installing the combination streaming and deck light on the mast.

Richard came to visit a while. He is just back from the states on his way to Mexico city and Zihuautanejo.

Next, Cristy came by and drafted me to go slave in her sign shop and said she would be back.

I pulled out the genoa to try the spinnaker pole and found that the genoa foot measures 14.5 feet, so the pole is too short and I had to tell Doug, to his disappointment. I'll have to repair my whisker pole.

Cristy came back at 10:45. We drove around, did various errands, then stopped at the DHL office and learned nothing.  We left none the wiser.

Next, back at her home and shop, we had lunch and spent and hour or more peeling the protective plastic off letters cut from foam with her laser controlled cutter.

When we were done I called inDriver and rode home, and at 3:45, here I am. I still have time to go to the Magote and clean the dinghy but paying the duty is Job One. and I can't figure it out in spite of looking on my bank's web page.

Vicki called and I invited her for supper.

Did I do even one thing on my list so far?  No.  4:30 - 125/74 69

This was a good day and it is not over, yet, but at 6:30 it feels like it.

I texted Vicki, but she says boats are dragging in the anchorage at the Magote and wants to stay onboard to fend them off.  No chicken for her.  I ate her portion.

Hmmm. This is Wednesday and there is dancing at La Costa or should be.  I'm sure Cristy is not up for it, but maybe I'll walk over.

It was too early to go over since it starts at eight so I lay down for a few minutes.

I woke at nine.

I then put in my drops and went back to sleep.

Temperature is 22.6°C and humidity is 42% in the cabin. I slept very well and got up at 4:00.  These days I sleep well in sweats with only a light blanket.

BG is 6.5. BP is 138/79 & 64 BPM.

I should take a bike ride this morning, but probably won't and should the dinghy to the Magote to clean the bottom, but at nine, I should go to my bank and figure how to pay the duty. This afternoon is the Thanksgiving turkey supper at La Costa.  I wonder how much I will get done today.

The GPS has corrected.  The red circle is back where it should be -- on Baja Magic.  Makes me wonder, though.  Howcum it was off that much for a few days and what are the navigation implications?

At nine, I caught a ride to Intercam and spent a half-hour with the bank staff paying the duty on my delayed wheel pilot.   Then I walked to the Soriana mall and went into the Telcel store and asked to have the Mitelcel app side loaded onto my phone.

As I left the store, that damned, horrible Little Drummer Boy was blasting from mall speakers.  I carried on to Soriana and bought groceries, then rode with Uber back to the Marina.

At 12:45 - 126/67 78

The Thanksgiving dinner was at La Costa at two, so I had a short nap, then walked over.  Tom had a table but Linda and David had another and I ended up at Linda's. Cristy and Eliel arrived a bit late but long before the meal was served.

The meal was excellent and was over around five. Nelson and I walked home to the marina. I read and watched video until bedtime at nine-thirty.

Baja Magic is at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.  Follow Baja Magic here. Corus is at at Port Sidney Marina.

I woke at two and had two itchy hands. I could not sleep, so got up and made coffee, washed my hands and tried rubbing alcohol and calamine lotion. After a half hour of trying to sleep, I decided that was not working and got up again. Maybe beer will work?

I wondered if the itch was from wiping my eye drops after application with the back of my hands and then noticed  and my ankles are itchy, too.  I applied hand cream to both last night.  That must be it.  Either the cream has deteriorated over time or I have become sensitive.

Temperature is 21.8°C and humidity is 32% in the cabin.

It is 4, now and I will try sleeping again.

I woke at 7:20, got up and the itching is over.  Strangely, I had forgotten last night that I have antihistamines that would have helped.

The day is sunny.  The net was very busy today and Cristy dropped over right after but was off to see friends about something. She may want to use the dinghy tomorrow and I was planning to go to the Magote beach to finish cleaning it but it is windy and choppy out on the bay.  I may try another approach.

It is ten fifty-two and all I have done is read and write.  I have to break this habit.

I received word my steering will arrive in two business days.

I have almost forgotten my bike which is sitting waiting for me.

I received a message saying the package is leaving Minnesota and another saying it will be delivered here today. Who knows?

I cleaned the leg on the dinghy outboard by tipping it up and lifting the end onto the dock.  It is not completely clean but running through the water will clean it and I can scrape the rest later at the beach.

I also got a message saying that my application for an MMSII for Corus was incomplete.  I had spent hours trying on the website and had an offer to assist from an officer but someone else sent me an officious letter.

I started on it and realised I almost registered it in my name and Corus belongs to my company.

It is hot enough today that I am using the fan

Meantime Karen and Mina are leaving Vancouver late and won't be at SJD  until seven.  By then it is dark.  They have a reservation in Todo Santos and intend to be there. We will see.

I got a message that the package is here. What a clown show.  I picked it up at the marina office and now I have to install it.

I opened the boxes and looked at all the parts, then started reading the manuals.  It is all very simple but takes some effort to gain familiarity with the principles and the installation.

Here is the actual wheel mechanism that clamps onto the helm (steering wheel), showing the belt and how it goes around the clutch.

I spent the evening reading the instructions for the wheel pilot and forgot all about Captain Wayne and Estrella.

Karen and Mina texted that they arrived at SJD and since I heard no more after that, maybe they are on their way to Todo Santos.  I hope so.. I went to bed at nine-fifteen and  woke up for a few minutes at ten fifty just before a text came in saying that Karen and Mina had made it to Todo Santos.  I was up for a few minutes and went back to bed.

La Paz, Baja California Sur | Sun and Moon |Tides | 10 Day Weather

Baja Magic is at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.  Follow Baja Magic here. Corus is at at Port Sidney Marina.

I woke at two-thirty and had two itchy hands again. I got up, washed my hands, applied calamine lotion, and went back to bed.

I am quite certain that this irritation is caused by wiping my eyes with the back of my hands after applying drops.

Cabin is 21.3°C and 40% RH.  Scale says 233. BG reads 7.0 and BP reads 145//83 & 62 BPS.  I notice that I forgot to take my bisoprolol since Monday.  I took it today.

I found the toilet full of water this morning.  I had absent-mindedly left the lever in the 'wet bowl' position and water had siphoned back.  Fortunately the boat designers have the rim above the water line, so the backflow stops short of overflowing the bowl, which could slowly sink the boat.  A while back I took the vacuum breaker out of the line since it plugged and led to smell, but will have to reinstall it for safety.

Just now I re-inspected the breaker, and guided by this article diagnosed and fixed the problem.  Now I have to pull the hose out, cut it, and reinstall the breaker.

*   *   *   *   *   *

Today I serve coffee at the clubhouse from nine to eleven.  I'll be doing that tomorrow, too.

Then, installing the new wheel pilot is the day's work.  In the evening I meet up with Karen and Mina when they get off the bus.  Meantime, Cristy may want to use the dinghy if the small craft warnings are lifted.
