Baja Magic is tied up at my home dock at Marina de La Paz but I am in the Marina Hotel at Topolobampo.

I slept better than I have for a while. Maybe that ivermectin I took yesterday made the difference?

I did have a slight visual aura but it went away. At any rate I got up and had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, then tried to reserve the ferry online -- again, with no luck.

So, I caught a cab down to the terminal and bought a ticket there and arranged for the cab driver to get me at eleven tonight at the hotel.

On my return, I went walking and came across the street market.

It is amazing to see fresh meat on display in shade but open to the 80 F air.  There are a few flies and nobody seems worried and I don't hear of illness.  Canada seems so overprotective.

I returned to the hotel and did some writing.  Then I took a walk to the Malecon.  I see there is no beach here that I could discern, but all in all I like this town.

Then I walked to the marina to look into berths there and by chance met Nelson, Shadowfax's friend.  He is the manager.

Seems that there is some cosmic link because I seem to be forever running into that Shadowfax family here, there and everywhere.

He said to be two hours early for the ferry, not one hour, so I stopped and told the taxi guys in the line-up to change my pick up time to ten in order to be two hours early for the ferry.

Right now it is six PM and i am waiting to go to the ferry at ten.  The the crossing takes eight hours from midnight to eight AM and I don't have a room thanks to hassles I may explain sometime.

Some of the usual asses on BEE-L got me fed up and I turned off moderation and said anyone can have the list.  I am tired of the whining and false assumptions about moderation and moderators.

I walked again over to the taxi line-up and found my driver, Hector, and made sure he knew to come at las diez no las once.

Oh and yes, I realised today that I lost my damn hearing aids.  Probably I lost them on the bus and it occurs to me that maybe I could recover them and maybe not.  Language is a big hurdle.  It is four hours until ferry time and Los Mochis is a half-hour from here.  Maybe I can write the bus company?  I'll think about that.  People are very good here and most would never think of not returning things to the owner.

Three hours until I go to the overnight ferry.

My Spanish is working fine for me.  I make decent statements and questions and am understood but I have trouble understanding the answers.  I know my vocabulary so can pick words that work for me but they use words I do not know.

*   *   *   *   *   *

I have been too busy to feel like writing.  Experiences have been coming at me like water from a fire hose.  Maybe I will fill in later and maybe I won't.  We'll see.

*   *   *   *   *   *

I checked out at ten and my taxi did not appear so I had another called and was at the terminal over an hour early.  It is all quite confusing being partly deaf and not being too good at understanding spoken Spanish but I joined the line-up and soon was boarding a van that drove us to the passenger area at the bow and many flights of steel stairs leading to the passenger deck.

Various people looked at my ticket and directed me to the proper salon where I found my seat --#51 -- at the very most forward right side of the boat.  The salon filled a bit but was mostly empty when the loading ended.

It was hard to tell when the boat pulled out it was so quiet.  I fell asleep sitting up and woke an hour later.  I sat there a while, then decided to sleep on the floor using my bag as a pillow. Others were doing variations on that idea and some were sleeping on the double seats.

Baja Magic is tied up at my home dock at Marina de La Paz but I am on the ferry from Topolobampo to La Paz.

I slept well and woke at a bit after seven feeling bright and not at all stiff or sore, especially considering I had slept four hours on the bare floor and it was a bit chilly.

After eight, sitting at the very front, facing forward, I was unaware that others were leaving but a steward alerted me that the restaurant was open so I went for breakfast.

Breakfast was steam table scrambled eggs and sausage mix plus beans and tortillas all in a styro container, plus a fork -- and it was free. I was surprised how hungry I was.

After returning to my seat, I looked out and could see only sea, but by a little before ten it was obvious were were entering the Canal de San Lorenzo and before long we were docked at Pichilingue.

It took an hour to get off and involved a long descent on narrow steel mesh stairs. Another van ride to the stern exit, a pass through security, and I found a bus that took me to the Malecon where Cristy and the younger son were waiting.

We drove to the boat, then Cristy and the lad went out in the dinghy for a ride and returned less than an hour later.

I went below and spent the day settling back in, including spending two hours getting contact info for the bus to Los Mochis and the hotels where I might have lost the hearing aids.

Since my Spanish is not up to explaining the details, I Whatsapped the info to Cristy and she phoned them all but we had no luck so I began looking for audiologists in La Paz.

I also made a stew/stir-fry with the vegetables in the fridge and some pork that was still good but on the edge.

I left here on the 15th, so was gone six days. Looking back, ten days would have been more relaxed.

Should I start backfilling the diary?  I have pictures and memories...

Yeah, I will. I'm starting on the 16th...

So I walked to SIX and bought some beer from the cubano owner then got to work. It is nine now.

This is really an interesting exercise in recalling what went by as a blur.  Meantime I am listening to Black Crow.

I spent the morning catching up and at two I met Linda and the others to go to Tom's party. I took some stew and some beer and my swim suit.

The party went on until after dark.  I was the only adult to go into the pool, but the kids were in most of the time.

Cristy drove me home, and shortly after I went to bed.

Baja Magic is tied up at my home dock at Marina de La Paz and I am home.

I slept well and woke at about eight and found a message from Colin.  He was arriving on the ferry.

I said I would meet him at the Terminal Touristisa on the Malecon.

We met and we decided to rent a car to take him to the San Jose del Cabos airport by three. I hailed a cab and to Enterprise and soon we had a car.

First, we drove to the local airport to get him a covid test and then off we went to San Jose del Cabos where his flight to Santa Cruz, Ca., was scheduled to leave in the afternoon.

Colin wanted to see a local marina while there so we diverted to see it and then got him the airport right on time.

Colin had rented the car for two days in case I did not want to drive all the way back same day but once in San Jose I just wanted to get home. The trip is much nicer and faster in a car than in the shuttle.

First, however, I went to Costco and bought a few things for friends and towels to make new seat covers for my cockpit benches.  Then I drove back to La Paz and stopped at Linda's to get her opinion on the fabric in the towels.  She approved.

Linda has offered to sew the cushion covers but I don't want to take advantage of a friend so I said to let me know if she decides it is too much.

I drove home and parked the car on the street.  Then, after the Dock Café closed, I moved the car into one of their customer spaces inside the compound for the night.  There have been break-ins on the street so why take a chance?  I'll move the car before the cafe opens in the morning.

I then went to bed.  It was after ten.

I slept well and woke at 0702.  Cabin is 20.9 and 41% RH.  I weigh 229.

I still have the car and expect to go exploring today.

Cristy came by but not for breakfast seeing as this is a German lesson day.

That did not work out though because Reiner was too hung over but Cristy was driving someone somewhere when I went for coffee. I don't claim to know what is going on.

We had agreed earlier that she could use my dinghy to go the going-away party on the Magote beach later. I was not going because I had a car for the day and Nelson and I had agreed to go exploring with me if Mac, the marina owner, was not counting on him going to fly model airplanes. The social life here is complicated.

As it turned out, Mac was too busy getting ready to leave to go back to the States for the summer.  The party on the Magote is for several couples leaving also.

Hurricane season is here and all the smart people are leaving but I am staying.  Other than hurricane risk this is a great time of year to be here, but it is hot!

Nelson and I pulled out a bit after ten and drove to El Triumph, an historical mining town. We had a long lunch there, then walked up to the mine.

A local joined us and explained things we could have figured out ourselves, but we all walked together up to the crypts and back.

At the bottom, he expected some money so Nelson gave him 500$ (pesos). We then drove on to Los Barriles and explored a bit, had a beer and drove to Muertos where we had supper at the 1537 Restaurant.

Back in La Paz, I parked on the street until the restaurant closed, then moved it into the compound for the night again and went o bed.

I still have the car and have to return it before 0938.  I'll do that right after net.  In the meantime, I moved it from the restaurant parking back to the street.

I have two days to get Baja Magic ready to go to the Partida Rally.  It seems I will have a full load.  So far Cristy and at least one of her boys, MJ, and maybe her dog, and maybe Vicky.  I'll have to stow my junk so that we have enough sleeping accommodations.

I returned the car and walked home. Cristy showed up shortly after for breakfast and then MJ came along. We visited in the cockpit for an hour or so, then I went in and cleaned up some oil around the motor, wiped down the companionway and made a stew.

Wow!  It is two already and 28°C in the cabin.  I have lots to do.  Maybe I'll catch up a bit more of the missing entries while I still remember where I was. I should finish yesterday, too.

I got the diary caught up as far as the nineteenth, but have not yet finished yesterday's entry.  Too busy, and, frankly, I'm uninspired.

After supper, I did laundry and went to bed at ten.

Baja Magic is tied up at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.

I woke at seven and got up. Net was at eight and Cristy came by for breakfast at 0930.  Today was her last yoga class of the season.

MJ bought some chairs and her ice machine and left in a hurry to drive to San Jose del Cabos and back.

I'm tasked with getting the boat ready for our departure tomorrow.  I need to buy food later today as well.

*   *   *   *   *   *

I worked all day on the fresh water pressure system and after a hike to Lopez for hose and hours of contortions I was finished around seven-thirty.

I called Didi and went to Chedraui to stock up.  When I was ready to return, I called Didi again and the driver appeared fairly quickly.

When we left the parking lot he turned the wrong direction and I had to explain the we were going the wrong way.

On examination we discovered the app had changed my destination. This caused some consternation for the driver but after some difficult mixed lingo discussion, we went to Marina de La Paz.

I put the food away and made a stew, then went to bed at ten-ten.

Baja Magic is tied up at my home dock at Marina de La Paz.

I woke at five and got up. Cabin is at 22.8. RH is 39%.   For the first time in a month or more, I have hot running water.

The water system does not seem to leak but I should re-tighten the clamps since plastic plastic hose changes shape under pressure.

I have to be ready for my crew by nine and that means stowing things and finishing the water work.  I still have the floorboard to modify to allow for the hose.

I was ready by 9 and MJ showed up but Cristy and her younger boy arrived at ten-thirty.  We left and motored out to Caleta Partida.

MJ and I tried to join a Zoom call by phone with little luck.  We could see but not hear and the engine noise did not help so we gave up.

At Caleta Partida we anchored and went across to the fishermen's camp.  Cristy wanted to arrange a trip by panga to the caves.  We made arrangements for tomorrow at nine, then returned to BM and rested up.

We had supper and relaxed, then at seven when we could see the campfire on shore and went in to the beach for the party.  MJ and I took in some wood with us, left from a previous beach party. Cristy was too tired to party and stayed on BM.

As we left BM, the dinghy had begun stalling. The choke cable had broken earlier but now the outboard would not idle properly and stalled or revved.  Hardly safe in the dark.

I would have stayed at the party but with the outboard issues I returned to BM.  I figured MJ would hitch a ride home somehow.  She knows everyone and is not at all shy.

I went to bed pretty well right away at eight-thirty or nine and slept well.  I heard MJ return later and some chatter in the cockpit where Cristy and her son were sleeping but I rolled over and slept.

I woke at five and got up, cooked bacon and made an omelette and coffee.

Shortly after, the others woke. They had breakfast and then, before nine, we went to the fish camp on the sandspit for our tour to the caves.

The fisherman who promised to take us at nine had not appeared but we were early. He showed up pretty much on time and off we went.

Linda and Reiner had followed us in their dinghy.  They were offered a free ride in the panga but declined and said they would follow.

A panga with 100 HP is pretty fast so they were left far behind but arrived just as we exited the first cave. We visited two caves and returned to the camp and then back to BM.

I took pictures but they seemingly were lost when I tried to copy them from the camera later.

Update: I found them.  They went to a different location than I expected.  For some reason they are not as clear as I like and maybe the camera was on an incorrect setting, like 'underwater'.

Then MJ, Cristy and the boy went to visit around the anchorage.  We had arranged some dinghy sailing for the boy and I heard later that went well.

I relaxed and had a nap, then moved BM across the bay to snorkel. The water was cool and a bit murky but I had a good swim and returned to the other side of the bay.

The outboard continued to act up but we managed to use it and Cristy made quite a few trips around the bay.

Around seven-thirty when we saw folks on the beach we loaded the rest of the mesquite logs into the dinghy and ran into the beach.

About thirty people joined the party.  It went on until sometime around eleven and eventually everyone left except MJ and me.  We sat there by the dying fire and chatted until 0130, then returned to the mother ship.

I woke at five and got up. I had slept only four and a half hours but was wide a wake.  It was 27°C overnight.

I cooked bacon and an omelette and made coffee.

*   *   *   *   *   *

After we returned, it seems that MJ had stayed up until four trying to make ice in her icemaker. I'm not sure why she needed ice but it ran the batteries down to 52% and -174 AH (66%) and I don't think she got much ice.

After my breakfast, MJ wanted to take the dog ashore again to do what dogs do on shore but Cristy took the dinghy and ran her son around on a tour of the bay, annoying MJ greatly.

Cristy was worried about her son and MJ, her dog.

The boy was not having fun on board with three adults, two of whom speak little Spanish.

He tended to be a wild card, with a habit of hogging space and fiddling with everything even after being told many times not to touch things that are not his without asking but I repeatedly found him handling things from personal items to part of the boat's navigation.

He was not interested in swimming or meeting other kids and was being a real drag.  He actually should have had a book to keep him busy but we later noticed he is addicted to media. That became obvious when his mom relented and let him have hers after we again entered Internet coverage.

The day got up to 36.1°C (99°F) during the day out out on the water, that is not oppressive.  The nice thing about anchoring out is that a nice cool swim is never more than a few feet away.

After I took MJ and Skye to the beach, we all decided to head back to La Paz early so we could stop along the way.

We got underway and I found the autopilot was not working.  I suspected the kid had done something and after some jiggling of wires got it going.

The day was calm until we crossed the Canal de San Lorenzo and then we had a bit of breeze, but it was on the nose so as it turned out, we motored all the way out to Partida and back to La Paz.

We were ahead of schedule so I anchored off El Tesoro for an hour and MJ and I went in to let the dog roam and for a beer.  The others stayed on the boat.  The kid was pouting and Cristy was feeling bad about it.

Once underway again, I noticed that Cristy had given the kid a phone and his face was sucked right into it, watching videos and laughing. That explains a lot.

We arrived at Marina de La Paz and I docked perfectly.  Everyone disembarked with their various bags and very little was left behind.

It was hot as Hades at the dock so I started a fan.  I made a stew and did some reading and went to bed late.

We don't have to wear masks much anymore in Mexico and many don't anywhere especially in small towns, but in grocery stores everyone wears them.  I still wear this mask I bought two years ago on eBay and I notice my mask looks cooler now that my beard has grown out.  I should remember to put it on straight.

I may let my beard get long -- ZZ Top long.

I am sure that by now most people know that masks do nothing at all to protect from anything except dust, but we wear them anyhow.

Cristy came by and did not have time for breakfast.  We agreed she will pick me up at six to work on the leaking dinghy.

I spent the morning working and lowered the dinghy to put the outboard on the dock for Jimmy.

Cristy wrote and says she is too busy.  Tomorrow.

MJ had left hamburger that needed cooking so I found myself making spaghetti.

It is three already and I have done next to nothing today.

I lay down for siesta and woke at 4:41.  Next I lowered the dinghy, removed the outboard and put it on the dock for Jimmy.  I texted Jimmy and he came for it quite soon after.

Vicky called and asked if I wanted to play Cards Against Humanity.  I said why not and soon was crammed into the cockpit of a double-ender nearby named Moondance with seven others of various nationalities and mother tongues playing this silly game.

It was fun but as the light faded, I said, "I think I hear my mother calling, so I should go home", and went back to Baja Magic.

I made an omelette and went to bed shortly after.

Now, down the Rabbithole we go...

Elon Musk on Twitter:
"Population collapse is the biggest threat to civilization"

Elon is absolutely right. What is hidden in plain sight is that much of human activity is centred around raising young and our entire Ponzi civilization requires growth, both real or synthetic -- and that depends on new participants and/or debt. Debt, unless used to build new productive assets, means eating tomorrow's dinner today. Money is just a promise of future delivery of something real.

We empowered China and then other countries in Indochina and brought women into the workforce to keep the growth going and we increasingly borrowed against the future.

All these new entries supported the enhanced lifestyles of those already in the scheme but at some point diminishing returns and limits to growth became apparent.

Promises can be promises for only so long and at some point, people expect them to be fulfilled but there are far more promises than assets to back them, since a by-product of prosperity is the tendency to have fewer children and protect them obsessively.

So here we are, looking for miracles.

From a reader:

Regarding your Elon Musk snip on population: I just discovered in those sleepless early morning hours an Economist and Demographer named Peter Ziehan.

If you do not know him, there are lots of his presentations on YouTube. He has sang the same song as his hair turned gray in the several I watched.

I do not say anything he says is true only that it is a different perspective and the declining world population is key in what I read.

Cold and dry on the prairie this spring with plants a month behind. Your hot weather would loosen up my arthritic joints. I enjoy your narrative

Thanks for that tip.  His research, observations, and reasoning seem sound.  I question his conclusions on some points, and his apparent confidence in the West.  What he relates, to me indicates Russia has strong incentives and the ability to prevail.  Maybe he just has to pretend.

Maybe I am biased, though, because I root for the underdog and it seems Russia was minding its own business and then was deliberately forced into the invasion as a defensive measure against NATO promise-breaking and aggression.

I slept fairly well, but sweated a lot at one point, woke early, and dozed from first light until 0655 when I got up.   I heard the freshwater pump run a time or two so still have some freshwater leaks.  I should finish the repairs today.

The cabin is 19.0°C and  47% RH.

Besides the repairs to the water system, nothing is planned for today except maybe Taco Tuesday.  I don't know if I will bother to go.

We'll see when Jimmy finishes with my outboard.  When he does I may go out to anchor.

I think the water leak is fixed now.  Of course it was under the hot water tank and repairs required draining the tank to access it.

Linda called and I guess I am going to Taco Tuesday.  Our ride arrives at 5:45.

BEE-L is hopping again.

I went to Taco Tuesday and on returning home started watching Minority Report.  The movie is good in may ways but with too much 'action'. I got a third of the way into it and went to bed.

It was about ten.
