I was resisting saying that Win 10 is looking to be worth exactly what they are charging for it, but I won't.

That would be uncharitable. Windows is still a formidable operating system.

I don't wish to be uncharitable either... but maybe that is why it's free for the first year, hence the beta testing comment. I believe Windows 10 will be a formidable operating system, but not at this time. I am not sure that it will ever be better than Windows 7 and the privacy issues in Windows 10 do give me grave concern, just because it says it's turned off doesn't actually mean it's turned off. I am seriously opposed to having my search results biased by my purchasing history. I see this with Bing and I see this in Google. You will notice that the ads you see on various pages reflect some of the products or product types that you recently searched. I don't like the fact that they're trying to manipulate what I see too extract money out of my jeans I'm sorry it's that simple I don't mean to offend anybody but that's the way I see it.

Watching DVDs/VLC may just be the first part of how Microsoft plans on driving revenue for the shareholders. I can guarantee you that I do not know Microsoft's plans other than extracting the maximum amount of $$$ out of the general populace, how they do this I do not know at this time.

Please don't get me wrong, Microsoft has done more for computers and the world of computers than anyone else past or present, but like any other major corporations they will say or do whatever they have to, to make their shareholders happy... This does not mean I should trust them. I do not mind admitting that I have made a decent living because of them, but I will never trust them.

The game is afoot and we shall wait to see how it plays out. Intel and AMD may have a hand in how this unfolds. I don't mind telling all that when the weather turns cold I will be seriously looking at alternatives to Microsoft just to have a backup for the worst-case scenario. I believe the official date for Windows 7 Official death is October 21, 2019 so there is a bit of time to figure out which way things will play out. I can guarantee you it's much easier to be positive about an operating system than to be cautious. Within a week of Windows 7's release I was telling everyone to go for it. It's much harder to be prudent and cautious, it goes against my optimistic nature.

My livelihood is tied to computers/Microsoft at this time, everyone knows I would starve as a beekeeper because of all the stupid mistakes I make. The girls are just not as logical as computers  at least to me.

Sorry for being long-winded.

I really don't know if I dislike being tracked or not. I know I'm supposed to be opposed, but if it actually worked, it might be a good thing. My problem with it though is that it is always trying to sell me something I just bought and serve me stories about topics or place I was interested in last week.
I don't like the fact that they're trying to manipulate what I see too extract money out of my jeans
Actually, they can't get money out of you. They get the money out of the advertisers, and if you ask me, the advertisers are shooting at where we have been, not where we are going. That means a whole lot of advertising is a waste of our bandwidth and screen real estate and the advertisers' money.

Imagine if you thought, "Gee I'd like thingamagig", and the only ten ads you saw in the next hour were ads for thingamagigs, near you and in your expected price range, with free delivery? They could be small, tasteful, and quiet, and they would be welcome -- to me at least, especially if they stopped after I bought one.

One major reason that ads are annoying because they mostly miss the target. Ads that address our needs and wants politely and discreetly are much less unwelcome, for me at least.

Of course the other major reason is that some ads move, shout, get in front of what we are there to see and are generally rude.

This does not deal with the question of whether we take risks giving up privacy or not, and that is unknowable.

I do like that thought especially if we could turn that feature on and off at will. However without being able to turn it off or to control it, you will get the ads from the top 10 paying advertisers and you may not find the truly unique solution that you're looking for. It also makes it very hard to find a free software solution (A line of code as an example) when everybody's trying to sell you something .
That means a whole lot of advertising is a waste of our bandwidth and screen real estate and the advertisers' money.
How much of our time has been wasted along with our bandwidth, screen real estate and our money. After all the advertisers money come from buyers maybe not you and me today but it will be tomorrow or at some point.

If Microsoft doesn't change it's way of thinking with Windows 10 I may never upgrade from Windows 7 on my main desktop. It may take a year or two for Microsoft to change after they get the message but they do have a history of changing their code to meet market demand. It will be interesting to see if the market demands its privacy back, I cannot see the corporate world tolerating the way Windows10 is. I freely admit I could be overly sensitive to this issue especially after Harper rammed bill C 51 down our throats.

I am old-fashioned without a doubt and I don't see how the further commercialization of the Internet helps anybody other than marketing departments and advertisers. At the end of the day it still feels invasive and manipulative but I wish to keep what personal freedom I might have left, even if it is a delusion.

That is my main complaint. I really need a better search than Google.

I remember when the internet was more like a community project than an attempt to get your money. Back then content was supplied by volunteers who were proud to serve, and there was plenty and it was high quality for the most part. Now everyone has to get paid, it seems.

Absolutely awesome! I have been playing with various firewalls and turning things on and off. Assuming you have relatively new hardware, you don't have any driver issues Windows 10 is not a bad OS if you could block the spying and break the tether to the mothership. I will certainly try these anti-spying apps out over the next few days. I do have Windows 10 32 bit running on a 10 inch tablet and 64 bit running on a laptop both seem to be more stable than a week ago. Windows 10 does eat more resources than Windows 7 so if you're upgrading older hardware don't expect it to run very fast.

These apps with a decent firewall may make Windows 10 acceptable..... Here's hoping.

Even when told not to, Windows 10 just can’t stop talking to Microsoft
It's no wonder that privacy activists are up in arms.
And finally, some traffic seems quite impenetrable. We configured our test virtual machine to use an HTTP and HTTPS proxy (both as a user-level proxy and a system-wide proxy) so that we could more easily monitor its traffic, but Windows 10 seems to make requests to a content delivery network that bypass the proxy.
We've asked Microsoft if there is any way to disable this additional communication or information about what its purpose is. We were told "As part of delivering Windows 10 as a service, updates may be delivered to provide ongoing new features to Bing search

Windows 10 is Great, Except for the Parts That Are Terrible

It Uses Your Upload Bandwidth Without Even Telling You.
...By default, Windows 10 automatically uploads Windows updates and apps from the Windows Store to other PCs over the Internet. This is a great feature when restricted to the local network, but Microsoft opts everyone into the Internet part of it by default, using your upload bandwidth for something that doesn’t help you.

Worse yet, there’s no indication this is happening unless you read about it online, find your Internet connection slow, or get contacted by your Internet service provider because you’re using up your limited upload bandwidth...
Also note this:
Worse yet, Microsoft is charging onwards despite criticism. Updates to Windows 7 and 8.1 add the telemetry service from Windows 10, making Windows users sticking with older versions of Windows for privacy reasons upset.

When I started looking out Windows 10 privacy issues I did not realize just how little privacy we actually have. As a matter fact I would go so far as to say we only have the illusion of privacy and that is all. I have listed a few things below but every major operating system seems to have these holes.

Apple engineered surveillance back door into 600 million iPhones

Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/046127_iPhon ... z3lFTqqWhf
of course Apple denies this wholeheartedly and apparently it goes way beyond just iPhones.
The Apple backdoor that wasn't
http://www.zdnet.com/article/the-apple- ... hat-wasnt/
“In fact, this allegedly "secret backdoor" was added to diagnostic information that has been as freely available as a page out of a phone book since 2002.
The packet capture software used for diagnostics referenced by Mr. Zdziarski in support of his claims is similar in functionality as the one that's installed on every Apple laptop and desktop computer for diagnostics.”
NSA Built Back Door In All Windows Software by 1999
http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2013/06/ ... -1999.html
Internet tracks everything you do in the amount of trackers on various webpages are astonishing to say the least. Privacy badger https://www.eff.org/privacybadger has helped me immensely to open my eyes. This is a browser plug-in that works amazingly well considering how crude their first release is. It certainly is a pain to set up.

There are even rumors that NSA has backdoors into Linux.

Apparently my presumption that law enforcement agencies and the legal system knows that “I’m presumed innocent until found guilty” therefore if "I’m innocent" there is no need to spy on me is totally wrong. It appears that there is one set of rules for law enforcement agencies and another set of rules for the general populace regardless of borders.

I am still digging into this trying to separate fact from fiction and what can be done about it. There is an amazing amount of traffic that computers generate just doesn’t seem right. I may need to set up a packet sniffer on a new network to see what’s going on.

My biggest fear would be you can lock your computer down and then with the next update, Microsoft undoes all your security settings and it’s business as usual for them.

At this exact moment I’m not 100% sure how to make my computer or network secure other than unplugging from Internet. It appears that every modern operating system regardless of source may have backdoors in them. Now while I have nothing to hide and they can look all they want to, it is a matter of principle to me, in that I believe they are violating my civil liberties and they expect me to be okay with this. In my mind I don’t see how the security organizations of the world or vendors like Microsoft, Apple are any different than the hackers or organized crime they’re all trying to get into my computer.

That statement is 100% true and they accomplish this with their marketing team by playing up the good parts and glossing over the bad parts if they mention them of all. Unfortunately most people only hear about the good parts and they never hear about the bad parts which is just the way the marketing teams like it. Can you imagine the TV commercials if Microsoft and Apple had to play by the same rules as the drug companies peddling their pills and had to disclose all the bad parts of using their software. I would imagine there would be some very fast talking at the end of the commercials.

Windows 10 is supposedly the most secure operating system that Microsoft has ever produced. If Microsoft truly believes that statement they are delusional or flat out lying to you, Microsoft is renowned for its security problems. It is just a matter of time before hackers and organized crime have a way into Windows 10, these exploits are routinely sold in the shadier parts of the Internet.

On the brighter side Microsoft seems to be cleaning up some of the buggier software causing blue screens but I still don’t consider it as stable as Windows 7 at least on older hardware.

The fact that we are using Windows and not Unix or OS/2 is a testament to the triumph of marketing over technology.

It took Microsoft years to build an O/S that equaled OS/2.

Even Atari was better than the early versions of Windows, which were not really an O/S, but rather a GUI for MSDOS.

When I first read this I was offended by the word socialist, however after thinking about it you may have hit the nail square on the head. What is really sad is that expression can be applied to many fields of endeavor not just computers/Internet. The worst part is you may have proved I am not the cold hearted capitalist that I thought it was.

You missed the NextStep operating system, I thought it was better than anything else unfortunately it didn't catch on at the time. I believe it is morphed into iOS.

To your point marketing trumps just about everything. However history proves and is full of examples like Betamax/VHS where the best product does not win because of marketing.

I am still hopeful that Linux will crack the desktop market, after all Linux rules almost everywhere with the exception of corporate servers and in the desktop market.

Nearly all electronic devices these days have a variant of Linux in them. From your media streaming device right up to supercomputers. It's lack of success in these areas is also due to marketing or the lack thereof.

Why would you be offended because you care about others? The word Socialist is given a bad reputation by the wealthy so they can keep screwing us over. Even in a capitalist society there are Socialist organizations, the Police, Fire Department, Road Networks etc. How about putting a man on the moon, there was a great Socialist endeavor. Just in the recent past the treatment for the Ebola virus was developed here in Canada by our Socialist medical system and not by Capitalists who never seem to get involved until there is a buck to be made. I'm proud to be classed as a Socialist and I've never seen the sense in acquiring wealth beyond what you need to be comfortable. After all," He who has the most toys and dies, still dies."

It really is a shame that Microsoft took this route because it really is a good operating system if you can disconnected from the mothership. Clearly with the Issues coming to light, Microsoft does not care about your/our privacy rights.

This is an old article that some of you may have seen
Windows 10 sends identifiable data to Microsoft despite privacy settings
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2 ... y-settings

Again this is an old article that some of you may have seen.
Windows 10: Microsoft under attack over privacy
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2 ... t-settings

If the public complains enough Microsoft will do something about it, unfortunately I'm going to be pessimistic and say there is potential that Microsoft will bury it deeper so that it can't be found. But stay tuned there will be a bunch of third-party apps to address these issues they probably need another month to finish polishing them. These issues with Microsoft and Windows 10 will be a moving target over the next 6 to 9 months.

I had high hopes that Microsoft was going to knock it out of the park this time But they seem to want to have one foul ball (OS) after another
