busman's holiday

Unread post by karen »

Today we started to split the hives we have been going through. These bees are AHB but toned down with some EHB mixed in. The bees are not bad at all but I am glad to be covered up since they are more defensive than my bees in the north. There is some true AHB's in a brush pile near by that we will have to deal with since they start in on us if we get near the pile.
We work early in the morning and then later in the day since it is so hot in the middle of the day. There are drones in the hives, a lot of capped drone brood, and some queen cells but so far all the queen cells have not been capped.
This afternoon we will go to the yard that has the northern bred queens, from my apiary, that I will be grafting from.
Wonderful weather here 80 F every day were at home it was -16F yesterday. To bad I go home the end of next week!
