For some reason I woke up thinking about using my smart phone for thermal imaging. So I decided to look and see what is offered. There are apps but none are great and then I came across this camera to add to your phone. It is more reasonably priced than some of the others.

Not something I really need but it would be fun to play with. Does anyone use thermal imaging to look at their hives in the winter?
What are your favorite beekeeping gadgets? It doesn't need to be electronics.

Re: gadgets
Best "gadget" I've found is duct tape and a good paint pen to mark issues/progress on a hive. Not smart enough for a smart phone.

Letter from Bob Hack
I received an email from Bob Hack yesterday that fits right into this thread.
Bob was selling off his bees a few years ago and I had lost my hives over winter, so I drove out through the mountains to buy some hives from him. We had a great visit and many things in common. See May 16th 2011 http://www.honeybeeworld.com/diary/2011/diary051011.htm
Like myself, Bob is an early adopter and the sort to look around and get off the beaten path from time to time -- and to come up with some pretty useful ideas on all sorts of topics. I highly recommend his website, cited below in the text of his recent email quoted below.
---- begin quoted message ---
As some of you know, I recently purchased a phablet (large screen phone), a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I don't ever remember buying a toy (for me) that has so amazed me, satisfied me and so over fulfilled any expectations I had of it.
Here is a post about it on my site: http://www.bobhack.net/compare-note-4-apple-6-lgg3.html
Cheers, Bob

Re: gadgets
I purchased one of the Seek Thermal cameras that Karen had sent a link for. Very interesting to look at things from a different point of view. The camera works pretty well and one can easily visually differentiate temperature differences of a couple of degrees. Even trees appear noticeably warmer than the ambient temp.
Here is an image of one of my insulated hives and a pot on the stove while making some fondant. The camera was actually much more reliable than the temperature probe and thermometer I was using.
