Duck Weed In Dug Out

Unread post by Colino »

Allen, do you aerate your dug out in the winter. I had all kinds of weeds growing in mine but last year I put a small sump pump and hung it from a raft to freeze in place. I let it run 24 hours a day all winter circulating the water. Our dug out barely has any weeds this year.

A bubbler make skating tricky.

I don't know if it would work with the amount I have. There are several options:
  • Pump out the reservoir, scrape out the black dirt, and start over
  • Skim off the duckweed into a pile somewhere with a pump.
  • Try chemicals
I'm inclined to get a better pump and some hose and pump the water up the hill to a compost pile and let it drain back without the weeds. It worked last summer, but we were too close to the pond and I had to haul the weeds away. Up on the hill, that would not be a problem. It is just a matter of investing time and money -- and thought and attention.

The first two, I have. The last item is hard to come by.
