Here is a positive article on beekeeping on old coal strip mines. (Around here, I've noticed sweetclovers growing at gravel pits, and considered putting hives near the gravel pits.)

While I am no tree hugging environmentalist wacko, (I thought Chernobyl was a neat place to visit) I do think it advisable to test the honey. Mines get a bad rap, especially metals mining which uses toxic chemicals for processing the metal ores, so it would be a good public safety reassurance to have the honey tested. And if there is a problem, it could bring attention so it could be addressed.
