Are you are looking for bee information?

I'm losing interest in bees lately and bee-related posts are infrequent these days but at one time I was very involved in beekeeping. Just about every topic has been covered somewhere on this site some time or another. Your best bets for finding ideas are:

1.) check today's date in previous years               2.) visit the selected topics page
                   3.)
search this site for keywords.
                          4.) visit BEE-L

 Monday October 1st 2018

Today Cloudy with 30 percent chance of flurries this morning. Periods of snow mixed with rain beginning near noon. High plus 4. UV index 2 or low.
Tonight Snow. Snow mixed with rain early this evening. Snowfall amount 2 to 4 cm. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 1. Wind chill minus 3 overnight.

I slept in until eight-thirty, but was up during the night to do some web work.

This morning, I updated the United Beekeepers site to include pictures and archive the event info.

I have company for supper tonight, but the predictions are for snow, so we'll see.  I was going to do a turkey, but will likely make chili or something that is scalable in case some decide to stay home.

I made spaghetti.  That seemed a safe choice and something that would keep if nobody came. As it worked out, though there were eight of us.

Tuesday October 2nd 2018

Today Snow. Amount 5 cm. High plus 2. UV index 1 or low.
Tonight Snow ending overnight then cloudy. Amount 2 to 4 cm. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 4. Wind chill near minus 8.

I woke up at five and got up.  I have to pack and get ready to go, plus shovel ashes, etc.

Snow was predicted and apparently Calgary got a lot, but there is just a skiff here.

For some reason, Westjet no longer sends me reminders to check in and I have missed checking in 24 hours ahead.  By the time I remember, I get assigned lousy seats. I've complained, but the problem has not been fixed.

I went to check the furnace and se that the grate needs cleaning, so I'll add that to my list before I go.

The efficiency drops off when the air distribution slits get blocked and that happens after a few months.  The job is simple, but involves cooling the grate, knocking off the ashes and then lifting the ring and grate, removing ash from inside and then cementing the grate back on.  It takes a half-hour or so.

I checked the Sudbury weather and it looks cruddy.  Rain for most of my stay.

I got to work on the grate and found that there was a  lot of sand under the grate.  I'm glad I got this done.  I've forgotten when last I did this job and it needs doing twice a season.

It's nine-thirty and I have two hours until I leave.  My flight is at 2:30 and when I check online, the flights appear to be leaving on time, except for Air Canada.

Air Canada has cancelled a lot of flights today.  That inconveniences a lot of people. They have done that to me and stuck me in a terminal for eight hours with no compensation and no apology.  I hate Air Canada., but when Westjet pulls out of Sudbury at the end of this month, I'll have no other choice to fly there.

Bert has agreed to drive me in and pick me up when I return.  That works for me as he is right along my route to YYC and he does not mind, being retired.

That is a switch from my usual solutions, but my last stay at Park and jet was $200 and that is ridiculous.  I have been parking in Airdrie, but it inconveniences Mike and I often have to use a cab if I return out of business hours. For shorter trips, I have been parking at the airport, but that is too expensive if I get held over.

I have yet to pack, but figure I'll do that and leave early.  I have a lounge pass and will have lunch in the lounge for free.  If I am delayed, I'll have a cushion to avoid panic.  The only fly in the ointment is if Westjet delays the flight and I am stuck there longer.  However, I have my toys along and can work there as well as here and if I am there, I don't need to worry about being delayed enroute

*   *   *   *   *   *

I drove the Merc to Bert's and we proceeded to YYC.  The roads were treacherous and the Merc's wide summer tires were not ideal for the slushy surface, but we made it there two hours before takeoff. I had lunch in the lounge, then went down to board.

Boarding was late.  Apparently my plane had arrived on time, but had to wait a half-hour for a gate as the ground crew was short due to the bad roads.  We took off, although I heard that other flights were cancelled, so I was lucky.

Toronto was warm and rainy and after two hours in the YYZ lounge, my next flight took off on time, landing me at YSB at ten to midnight.

Bill was there to pick me up and dropped me at 1207 around twelve-thirty.  I went right to bed.

Wednesday October 3rd 2018

Today Light snow ending early this morning then a mix of sun and cloud. High plus 5. UV index 4 or moderate.
Tonight Partly cloudy. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 5. Wind chill near minus 8.

I woke up at 0630 and got up.  I had coffee and eggs, then lay down again but was not tired and got up again shortly.

I had heard the van would not start for Sid, so I went out and sure enough, it did not, so I found the charger and connected it. After a few minutes on charge it started right up, although the charge had been only five amps. Maybe the battery is getting poor. The tires are low again, but at least there is enough air in them I don't need to call AMA to fill them if I drive carefully to the air pump.

I had coffee with Mom, Mardi, Anne and Greta, then drove to the gas Centennial Drive station, filled the tires and drove to Bill's.  We looked at the various towers he has stored in his back yard, then went to A&W.  When we walked in, his sister and husband happened to be the first people we saw. We ordered and then sat with them a while.

Next we went to Walmart and ran into Faye. Small world. The Tractors Store was next and then I dropped Bill at home.  It was still early, but I was too tired to do much.  I picked up a roast chicken on the way back to 1207.

I had a nap and we had supper, then I had another nap.  I'm tired.  Too much travel, too much amoxicillin and maybe this infection is dragging me down.  My jaw is almost back to normal, though, so am quite certain I had an infection: likely an abscess in a molar that has no feeling.

Jon wrote asking about my plans around his wedding and I had to say I don't have any other than to be there.

I can't quite visualize how the whole thing will go down before, during or after.  Jean and family will be there and maybe Bill, Faye, Myra, Ken, etc... I should ask.  Jon and Steph are going away right after and I don't know what the kids are doing or Daisy for that matter.

I am up now until midnight, having watched The Good Cop for a while and catching up these pages.

I'm also checking flights from La Paz to Tijuana and back.

It is pouring rain outside and windy..

Thursday October 4th 2018

Today Cloudy. Becoming a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon. High plus 4. UV index 3 or moderate.
Tonight Clearing this evening. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 6. Wind chill minus 3 in the evening and minus 8 overnight.

I slept in until ten and got up, had oatmeal for breakfast, then made chicken soup.  While I was making the soup, I began working on the wedding plans.  I called Myra and confirmed when and where they will be arriving, departing, and staying.

I was tired all day and napped in the afternoon, then set up a calendar to coordinate the events surrounding the wedding. My travel insurance has been a hassle at fifteen days coverage, so I renewed it to cover 30-day trips.

Friday October 5th 2018

Today Sunny. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 7. UV index 4 or moderate.
Tonight Partly cloudy. Clearing near midnight. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 4. Wind chill near minus 6.

Sid is coming at ten for coffee, then the rug cleaners are coming at eleven-thirty.

Sid came and went.  The rug cleaners also.

I spent some time catching up on things and reserved a flight from YYC to SJD for the 28th. That gives me two weeks at home after I return there on the eleventh. I then plan to fly to Tijuana on the 9th of November for Jon's wedding and stay in Aliso Viejo until the 24th, two days after Thanksgiving, when I'll return home.  I still have to reserve the La Paz to Tijuana flight.

I'm also working on my phone plans.  I've been with Rogers, but the cost is ridiculous and am considering going strictly with a Mexican plan and using Fongo for my Canadian number.  My main concern is whether Fongo will run down my phone battery.  Otherwise, it works without borders.

My doctor phoned and asked how my jaw is and I said I am just about recovered, but might need more medication if this runs out before I am completely cured.  She wondered about of the risk if C-difficile and I said I am aware of the risk and won't take the medication longer than necessary to cure the pain, so she renewed the prescription one more time in case I need it. I am impressed.  Excellent doctor!

Then I went shopping for turkey and the rest of Sunday's meal.  I had good luck and found a butterball turkey with stuffing already inside and the rest of the items on the list.

Saturday October 6th 2018

Today Mainly sunny. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 11. UV index 4 or moderate.
Tonight A few clouds. Fog patches developing overnight. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 6. Wind chill minus 8 overnight.

My jaw is almost better and I have only four pills left. Should I renew?  We'll see.  My weight is up to 225 and not going down, so it is time to do something, I suppose.  I have not been walking, so maybe it is time to start again.  I have not been feeling especially energetic, possibly due to the amoxil or the infection, but I am feeling more like walking today.  The day is dull and cool, but I'll give it a try.

The rain continued on and off all day.  In the afternoon, I went to Walmart to get the third course of this antibiotic treatment.  I'll take the amoxil until the jaw is normal.  I'm almost there, but not quite.

I bought more groceries and walked the mall to check on phone plans.  I settled on a $10 plan from Public Mobile.

Back home, after supper, I activated the SIM and ported my number from Rogers to Public, then set up forwarding to my Fongo number, and installed my Mexican SIM.

Now my Canadian calls go to Fongo and my Mexican calls ring my phone app, and I am using my cheap Mexican data.

After that, and much testing, I reserved a flight from La Paz to Tijuana to attend Jon's wedding. That job took a long time and the website was balky.  Google insisting on translating to English did not help much and maybe corrupted the forms, but I got it done sometime after midnight.

Sunday October 7th 2018

Today A mix of sun and cloud. High 12. UV index 3 or moderate.
Tonight A few clouds. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 3. Wind chill minus 5 overnight.

I slept until almost eight and got up.  Today we make Thanksgiving dinner for six.

Mom and Roseanne made two pumpkin pies first thing.  As soon as they were done, I put the turkey into the oven.  The target being to finish by five and eat supper then.

During the day, I prepared the rest of the meal: salad, broccoli and cauliflower, asparagus, and boiled the potatoes.

At four, Sarah and Sid came.  Sarah mashed the potatoes while I put the finishing touches on the meal.  Mitch and Sharon came over and everyone sat in the living room and looked at Sid's pictures of Norway until supper.

The turkey was cooked around four-thirty, rested a while, and was on the table by five.  We sat down at five and were finished by six.  Everyone joined in for the cleanup and we were done by seven.

The fridge is full, even after giving away scraps, so the rest of the turkey is in the unheated garage where it is cool.

Monday October 8th 2018

Today Increasing cloudiness early this morning. 60 percent chance of flurries. High plus 1. UV index 1 or low.
Tonight Cloudy. 60 percent chance of flurries this evening. Periods of snow beginning late this evening. Amount 2 cm. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low minus 1. Wind chill minus 5 in the evening.

The big meal yesterday had an effect. I woke up at five and had coffee. I may go back to bed once I wake up, but would just doze if I don't wake up first.  My jaw is better, but still not back to normal.

Looking at conditions in Baja Sur, here comes Sergio (left).  He is predicted to miss La Paz, but who knows? When first forming, he was expected to go straight west. We should know by 11PM Thursday, though.

These forecasts are just guesses, though.  Weather is chaotic.  Sometimes the forecasts are right, but often they are very wrong. One has to wonder how, if 'scientists' cannot model the weather accurately three days ahead, how they can predict the climate years or decades in advance.

Here is an interesting article -- BOMBSHELL: audit of global warming data finds it riddled with errors -- from Watts Up With That?  The article makes some very good points that should be obvious to any thinking person but which typically escape the public discourse.  See also Climate Audit, credited for first breaking the Climategate news.

So often we are presented by opinion as fact.  Who can we believe?  If my experience is any indicator, no one.  In my experience, a good argument is not proof, and that goes for both sides of this debate.  Arguments are just manipulations of symbols.  What is real is real, and largely unknowable.  As Yogi Bera said,  "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future."

Early October is still typically hot, with temperatures in the mid-thirties and nights in the mid-twenties but word on Facebook is that the hot weather in Baja Sur has broken and the days are now cooler.

I am booked to be back in La Paz on the 28th.

I lay down again at 0630, closed my eyes, lay there a moment and got back up.  I could see that I am not going to sleep. My mind is too active.  I have a lot of loose ends to tie up. Plans to make, bills to pay...  It seems things are just not getting done.

I never seem to have enough time any more.  I'm a fair way behind in my books and general planning, and the diary was neglected for weeks a while ago.

I've  been wondering if my mind is going, but I think I just have so many balls in the air that keeping tabs is a big job.  That, and I'm toying with the idea that I now spend time I would have previously spent doing nothing reading largely meaningless "news" and articles on my smartphone and that is reducing the amount of time my mind has free to wonder and remember matters of real impotence.

WESTJET Flight WS 3573 Wednesday, 10  October Departure: 19:55

Today is Monday and I fly home Wednesday, so I have two and half more days here.

I went to bed again at seven and woke up at nine. It is raining, again. I should really sleep all day, but seem to have lost that ability.

Sergio has slowed down, but the course is the same. So far, the probability of hitting La Paz is shown as low.

"Historical data indicate that the entire 5-day path of the center of the tropical cyclone will remain within the cone about 60-70% of the time. To form the cone, a set of imaginary circles are placed along the forecast track at the 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h positions, where the size of each circle is set so that it encloses 67% of the previous five years official forecast errors. The cone is then formed by smoothly connecting the area swept out by the set of circles.

"t is also important to realize that a tropical cyclone is not a point. Their effects can span many hundreds of miles from the center. The area experiencing hurricane force (one-minute average wind speeds of at least 74 mph) and tropical storm force (one-minute average wind speeds of 39-73 mph) winds can extend well beyond the white areas shown enclosing the most likely track area of the center. The distribution of hurricane and tropical storm force winds in this tropical cyclone can be seen in the Wind History graphic linked above.

Frankly, I think it is amazing that they can predict at all, even if they are far off sometimes.

Sarah came over and went through Mom's stash of old letters and reports cards with her.  They found a letter from me to Mom and Dad written back in 1956 and the first line was, "I can sail!", and the letter went on to say the YMCA camp had three sailboats and two are in working condition.

Tuesday October 9th 2018

Today Periods of snow. Risk of freezing drizzle this morning. Fog patches this morning. Amount 2 to 4 cm. Wind east 20 km/h. High minus 1. Wind chill near minus 9. UV index 1 or low.
Tonight Periods of light snow ending near midnight then cloudy with 30 percent chance of flurries. Wind northeast 20 km/h becoming light this evening. Low minus 4. Wind chill near minus 8.

I woke up at five, feeling hot and dry.  I had slept fitfully, likely due to eating before bed and the fact that the furnace is on.

I was groggy at first, but after a coffee or two and oatmeal for breakfast, I am good to go and working on my list of things to do.  The item at the top is to reserve seats for my flights, both tomorrow, and farther out. I have vouchers that are unused and they can expire, so best use them now. I also have bills to pay.

My jaw is almost better, but I can feel a little sensation in a lower molar and I suspect that is the focal point, the spot where the infection began. It has taken a lot of antibiotic to overcome the infection so far. I'll likely see a dentist on my return home.

Sergio has not advanced on Baja Sur since last report and the predicted path remains unchanged.  At present, it appears that Sergio will diminish to a storm passing a hundred miles or more north of La Paz.

I drove Mom to the audiologist after lunch, then made quiche and while it cooled we had a supper of leftovers.

After supper, I decided I needed a walk, having been inactive lately, so I walked up to the Plaza and had a beer.

I walked by that hotel every day on my way to school and back fifty-five years ago. nut never was inside until Bill and I dropped in one day a few months back on a walk around Minnow Lake.
