I slept until ten again.  My internal clock is screwed up.

I did a bit of housecleaning. That's about it.  Well, I also did some planning for the Rendezvous in October.

In economics, things take longer to happen than you think they will,
and then they happen faster than you thought they could.

I slept well.  My new phone has still not arrived and then old one is having issues, so I spent some time chasing through Neweggg and Purolator Courier and Canada Post to no avail.

Then I took some throw rugs out onto the sidewalk and pressure-washed them. I'm still ignoring my bees.

For some reason, I just don't seem to get much done in a day.  My energy levels seems a bit low and even when I work at projects, I feel I'm getting nowhere.  Odd.

I cleaned up in the laundry room and washed the front walk, did some mowing and then had to quit as the rain closed in.  I noticed that the pool got up to 22 degrees by the end of the day.

I notice that hail has knocked the cups off my wind indicator.  No wonder there is never any wind shown on the screen.

What experience and history teach is this that people and governments never have learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it.

I slept well again, and weigh 216 this morning.  My weight is not changing much lately.

My bedroom was still fairly dark at 0600.  The days are getting noticeably shorter.  From here forward, the change will accelerate and we could see frost any day now.

I see the pool lost four degrees C overnight.  The sun rises in the northeast at this time of year, so my 'solar panel' does not get sun until mid-morning.  At 0930, the sun is just barely getting around to the south side.  The south side is still in shade.

I tidied, watered plants, and headed for the airport around 1600, planning to stop at the Three Hills vet for another systemic for Zip.

I made the vet's barely on time and drove to Linden, where I dropped Zip with Flo and proceeded to YYC.

My flight took off on time at 2030 and reached Fort McMurray about two hours later.  My next leg was scheduled to fly from YMM to YYZ where I was to catch the 0830 to Sudbury. I was flying on points and had been assigned a circuitous route in consideration that I only paid $188 in fees rather than the full-up fare of $1200+.

Flying into FM was surrealistic.  Areas of the burnt areas were still smoldering and the steam and smoke rising under a cloud layer with sun slanting in painted a sci-fi cover picture.

Contrary to what alarmist press coverage features, FM is surrounded by forest with little sign of "Tar Sands" activity. Roads and grass strips to compounds in the forest and bright lights were to only signs of industrial activity, and the townsite appeared largely intact from where we descended.  On the runways and in the airport there was no sign of the recent disaster.

Interestingly it appeared, in the half-light of dusk that the forests were not burnt evenly, with large green patches apparently untouched amidst large black areas.

The happiest hours of mankind are recorded on the blank pages of history.

Today Sunny. Becoming a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon. High 29. Humidex 31. UV index 7 or high.
Tonight Partly cloudy. Clearing before morning. Risk of a thunderstorm late this evening and after midnight. Low 10.

Our onward flight was a bit late leaving, and lifted off just before 0100, but arrived at YYZ on time.  I slept the whole four hours.

Once in the terminal at YYZ, the board announced that my next leg had been cancelled.  This is not the first time I have left with the onward flight confirmed and on-time, only to find it cancelled and it seems Air Canada is very cavalier about stranding people.  As it happened, I was delayed over eight hours and thus entitled to a hotel, but was refused by four different employees, each with a different excuse. Disgraceful.

Eventually after sleeping on  the waiting room floor, I caught a flight and arrived at YSB twenty-two hours after taking off initially.  Bill picked me up and we drove to 1207.

I slept until 1000, then spent time with Mom.  After lunch and after her nap, we went to Walmart for groceries, then returned for supper.

After, I went to Bills to visit and have a walk.

I spent the day setting up a tablet for Mom.  This is the third time.  Both times before, she threw up her hands and quit. It is a lot of work to set one up and tutor, so I made her promise to tough it out this time.

I also ordered Internet and changed the phone over to the cable provider.  Bell, shameless bandits they are, had sneaked her landline phone bill -- no long distance -- up to over $50/month.  Bell deliberately preys on old folks and those who are unable or unwilling to fight the bill down periodically.

Bell and Air Canada are two Canadian firms that deserve a good licking. Our retail sector got taught a lesson by Walmart some time back and it is high time someone beat these two heartless giants up a bit.  In my opinion, their business practices sometimes border on the criminal and sometimes cross the line -- intentionally, it seems.

The Walmart tune-up taught our retail sector to treat the customer with the utmost respect or sit in an empty store watching the hordes flock to a retailer that treats them better.  That was an entirely new concept to a sector that acted to that point as if they owned the customer.  Some learned.  Some didn't, and the losers won't be missed.

We met Sid and his girlfriend at Apollo for supper and returned to 1207.  I pulled Carpe Diem, my Hunter 23.5 sailboat out onto the drive to wash her down tomorrow and hope to launch by noon or so.

I have only a few more days here this trip. This is day three out of seven, one of which was wasted by Scare Canada.  I was sitting at YYZ for a while beside a couple from LA who had taken two weeks off to go to Quebec and were spending the entire first day in the waiting room.  I have to wonder how many peoples' vacations are ruined by these thoughtless airlines, with no compensation.

...first photograph was taken at an intersection in New York on Broadway in 1905 and if you look carefully you will see trolleys and horses and not a single automobile.
The day that photograph was taken 25 percent of all American agricultural produce was used to feed horses.
And yet look at this second photograph taken on the same intersection just 20 years later.
What you see are trolleys and automobiles and not a single horse.
That shows the kind of change we’re likely to see over the next two decades.
Brad Smith

I spent the day off and on teaching Mom the tablet.  Mid-day, the cable guy came and installed the Internet.

In the afternoon, Mom made meatballs and I made a pot of soup, then I cooked supper.  After supper, I began washing the boat again.  It gets terribly filthy sitting beside the garage.

After dusk, I came in and coached Chris by text message as he was troubleshooting a gear shift problem with the pontoon boat motor.

Texts are good for short conversations, but less so for anything complex or ongoing.  We both have high speed Internet, so Skype would likely have been better after initial contact but some people seem to find texting works for them.  Me, less so.  I use texts for brief conversations, but find, even with voice dictation, that texts are awkward after a few exchanges.

I watched video until I was sleepy and went to bed just after midnight.

I'm currently watching Marcella

The series is surprisingly gripping.  I usually do not watch more than one episode of a series at one sitting, but this one has proved to be an exception.  The writing is excellent, but there is far more than enough murder.

Apparently, the series is created by the same screenwriter as The Bridge, but I found that one less interesting and only watched an episode or maybe two.

All you get from a circular argument is dizzy.

I woke up early, at 0530 and had breakfast.

Having gone to bed after midnight,  I had only five hours of sleep, but that seemed enough.

Tonight I fly home.  I had hoped to launch my boat, but time is short, and I did come primarily to visit Mom. I spent the day coaching her on the tablet and cleaning the boat, then putting it away. After Jon's upcoming visit to the Old Schoolhouse with his family, I plan to return.  I'll sail then.

The shuttle picked me up at 5 PM and I was a t YSB in good time. Around 1 Am, I landed in Calgary.  I texted Flo and she said she was up visiting with her sister, so and drove to Linden to pick up Zip.  After a visit, I got home around three and found my new phone waiting in the mail.

I played with it and got to bed at four.

So, in the interests of survival, they trained themselves to be agreeing machines instead of thinking machines. All their minds had to do was to discover what other people were thinking, and then they thought that, too.
