Today, I meet Frank at Jolly Harbour any time after 1400.  Apparently the buses do not run on Sundays, so I'll have to take a cab.

Right now, I am sitting on the deck enjoying the morning and free Internet, possibly for the last time in a while.  We'll see.

I rode a taxi to Jolly Harbour and was gouged an extra $10, but it is what it is.  Nobody works on Sunday here, so you take what you get.

I met up with Frank on schedule and we caught up on things, then had supper on the dock.  Nothing is cheap here.

We have some errands to do, provisioning and laundry, plus I have to find some snorkel fins that fit, then we will be heading out to anchor and be ready to make the passage to Guadalupe tomorrow.

We got up with the dawn, had breakfast and checked the forecasts, then motored clear of Antigua, set a course of 188 degrees Magnetic and sailed to Guadeloupe.  Seas ran up to ten feet and winds gusted to twenty-five knots and we stood turns at the helm, steering through the waves.

We arrived at Deshaies at around 1330, tried four times before getting an anchor set where we felt comfortable, cleaned up, checked into customs and had a few beers at a cafe with wi-fi, then returned to Compass Rose for supper.

Guadeloupe is French and the people speak French, many with little or no basic English, which is surprising in a tourist town.  The money is Euros and the US dollar is refused, as is East Caribbean currency from adjacent countries.  Some of the non-natives must have come direct from Paris as they seem particularly unhelpful in the way that Parisians are known for worldwide.  The natives seem more friendly and understanding.

The wind blew all night in the anchorage and this morning we are reading gusts up to thirty-five knots.

We went into town, wandered around, checked email and returned to the boat, swam, napped, had supper, then called it a day.

I re-worked one of my presentations, improving it considerably, I hope.  This is the BCHPA Financial Side of Beekeeping talk.  I had intended to fine-tune it the day before my presentation in BC, but had forgotten my computer and only had it on a stick, fortunately.  I'll be giving it again in New York, so had to change a few things, and, as always, after a few months, I could see places to add ideas and improve on others.

I began on the Beekeeping Myths talk and it is coming along nicely, I think.  I want to finish it far enough in advance that I can age it a bit.

It is a good rule in life never to apologize.

and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them.

We are in Deshaies again today to get a few things, then off to the Jacques Cousteau Park.

We arrived around noon, caught a ball and snorkeled for an hour, had a lunch of wieners and beans with toasted baguette, and continued down the coast.  We'll anchor at the south end of Bas Terre tonight and plan on making Pointe-a-Pitre tomorrow.

The winds were shifty all day and varied from zero to thirty-five knots from various directions, so we sailed a bit and motored quite a lot.

When we are motoring, Frank puts out a fishing line and at one point we caught a barracuda, but let it go as it is of no use to us.

I managed to get a bit of a sunburn while snorkeling, having forgotten that my back is above water.  So far it does not seem too bad.  I usually get a bit red before I build up a base tan.

The Jacque Cousteau Park did not prove to be anything special as far as I could tell, but there were numerous kayaking tourists and a dive boat and glass-bottom boat came along while we were there.

We continued a few miles to Riviere Sens and anchored for the night.

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

We hoisted anchor around 0800 and motored out of the bay and down past the reef at the south end of the island.

Off the point, the wind was blowing thirty-five knots in the gusts with waves up to ten feet right on the nose, meaning we had to tack as close to the wind as we could manage several times before we were on a close-hauled line our destination, Pointe-a-Pitre.  It made for a rough eight hours, but pleasant enough in this 45-foot Jeanneau.

We anchored in the lee of Ilet du Gosier about two miles east of our marina destination for tomorrow, swam, had supper and sat around until dusk.

I called the marina and arranged a slip, then we ran the mile or two down to the harbour, tied up and checked in.  We are currently at the Marina Bas du Fort in Pointe-a-Pitre, waiting for a third crew member.

Kevan came aboard around 1800 and around 2000, we went for supper at Pirates'.  I was tired, but went along anyhow.  Of course, once we got back and it was bedtime, I was wide awake.

We are planning on leaving the marina around noon, headed for the Isles des Saintes.

Our track was along the path we took two days ago but we continued on out and arrived at a mooring ball at Anse du Bourg on Terre-de-Haut in the Isles des Saintes by mid-afternoon.  We all went ashore and walked the main street, then returned to the boat for supper.

Our dinghy dock is near the ferry dock and it seems this port is a favourite weekend getaway for the nearby islanders.  The bars at the main dock were crowded until the ferry left at 1700.  Frank and Kevan sat down and had two rum punches each, and it seems the bartender did not skimp on the rum.

We returned to the dinghy and came across a young couple with small kids who had run their dinghy out of gas, so we gave them a tow to their boat.

We had supper and that was our day.  So far the new guy seems OK.  He and Frank have sailed together a lot before and are buddies.

I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt
to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

We are planning on leaving the anchorage around noon, headed from Isles des Saintes to Dominca.

We beat into strong winds and waves until we arrived at Portsmouth where we picked up a ball with the help of a "boat boy" and went snorkeling.  We paid $25 US each for an hour and a half and it was good value since I had been considering SCUBA and found that there was nothing exceptional.
